Hazardous hand tools

The course provides a basic introduction to the safe use of hazardous  small tools such as:


Saws: Circular saws, oscillating saws, chain saws, concrete saws, jigsaws, cutting and miter saws.

Impact machines: Impact drills and chisel hammers.

Milling machines: Edge routers, hand routers, plunge routers, slat routers.

Pistol tools: Nail, dive, staple and bolt guns.

Angle grinders.

Electric planers.

 

When an employee is required to carry out risky tasks or operate work equipment that can cause injury, there are specific requirements for documented training.

The course takes the form of mixed learning. The first part of the course takes the form of a game developed by FIDL in accordance with applicable laws, regulations and standards. The practical part is taken physically.

This course satisfies the requirements for documented training set out in the regulations on the performance of work.


Target group:

The primary target group is operators of dangerous hand tools.

The extended target group for the theoretical part is representatives of employers in companies where hazardous hand tools are used and safety representatives and persons who are assigned control or coordinating functions in these companies' health, safety and environmental work.

Participant prerequisites:

It is expected that the operators of dangerous tools have sufficient user knowledge within one or more of the tool types covered by the course. For the rest of the target group, there are no prior knowledge requirements.

Learning objectives:

The participant will understand the importance and scope of safety training in the use of dangerous hand tools and understand the importance of good attitudes and behaviour when using such equipment.


The participant will understand and explain


  • safety risks when handling dangerous tools, and factors that affect the safety of their use,
  • measures that reduce the likelihood and consequences of the risks,
  • the duty to notify and report accidents, and the registration of occupational injuries,
  • machine and user safety - the manufacturer's and user's obligations,
  • instruments in the HSE work with responsibilities and duties for safety,
  • safety regulations that apply to the work area,
  • work techniques, clothing and the use of personal protective equipment,
  • the purpose of and need for safe job analysis (SJA),
  • use, control, maintenance, inspection and servicing of dangerous hand tools.
